What Can They Do?

Anti-ageing injectable treatment prevents wrinkling by reducing excessive muscle contraction. It is usually used in the crow's feet area, between the eyebrow and sometimes on the forehead. It prevents excessive wrinkling during smiling and frowning and prevents wrinkles from becoming deeper. If you keep on a maintenance treatment, you can prevent further wrinkles and reverse existing lines preventing aging and maintaining a youthful appearance. Many patients are now seeking treatment as early as their twenties or thirties before they develop permanent deep lines. However, it is never too late! Treatment is just as successful and advantageous in males as well as females.

What they Can't Do

Established deep wrinkles, already present at rest will not be completely eliminated with muscle relaxant injection, this is why it is better to start earlier in the aging process. These may require chemical peels or laser skin resurfacing for improvement. Injectable agents can prevent these lines becoming deeper and can be used with laser skin resurfacing for the best result.

How We Do It

This treatment is done quickly as an "office" procedure. We place ice over the area to be treated for 10 minutes or so. Dr Mooney then injects using a ultra-fine syringe. After treatment you can return to work immediately. Occasionally the area may have a small bruise.

How Does It Work?

The agents that are injected are natural, purified protein that relaxes wrinkle causing muscles. The active ingredient is botulinum toxin, derived from bacteria in much the same way penicillin is derived from mould. When injected into a muscle it causes weakness or a paralysis of that muscle by acting at the nerve-muscle junction. The protein is present only for a short time, but the effects last for several months. It is interesting that, unlike many other medications, the more this is used the less amount and less frequently it is often needed! This protein is safe and has been used in different parts of medicine for several decades without significant side effects and excellent patient tolerance.

Timing

The full effects will be visible fully after 3-5 days and usually lasts 3 months or more. Repeat injections usually last longer, and the best time for a top up is before wrinkling starts to recur.

Post Injection

We recommend that you maintain an erect posture and not to manipulate the area of injection for at least 4 hours post injection. Avoid alcohol consumption for 24 hours and report any concerns to our clinic.

Botulinum toxin has been used safely by doctors for nearly 30 years and is used by millions of people, both men and women, throughout the world every year. It is one of the most studied and researched medical treatments with no long term side effects reported. Treatment of frown lines on the forehead can cause minor temporary droop of an eyebrow in 2% of injections. This could last 2-3 weeks. Occasionally, slight swelling or bruising can occur and last for a few days.
